Gavel Utilized by the Supreme Court of Washington State
This gavel was used in several Supreme Court cases in Washington, included in this package are the opinions on two of them. The case of Beltran-Serrano v. City of Tacoma was a case of police brutality in which Cesar Beltran-Serrano, a mentally ill homeless man, with limited English skills, was shot multiple times by a Tacoma police officer after a conversation escalated to the use of deadly force. Overturning the Superior Court's ruling that this case was not a case of negligence, the Supreme Court held that the claim could be proceeded. The case of State v. Romero-Ochoa was a case in which Leonel Romero-Ochoa was convicted of burglary, unlawful imprisonment, assault and multiple counts of rape, arising from an incident in which he broke into a woman's home. The Supreme Court held that excluding evidence of the victim's U-Visa application was not automatic error, and may be harmless given the overwhelming evidence by the victim of the assault and rape.
